5 Benefits of Hiring a Copywriter

Many businesses try to save money by doing all their copywriting themselves or don’t know that copywriting services even exist.

Hiring a copywriter can be invaluable to your business – whether you’re launching a new website, uphauling your existing one, or running a new marketing campaign.

5 Benefits of Hiring a Copywriter

First of all, what is a copyrighter?

Not to be confused with “copyrights,” which involves the legal right to sell and distribute copyrighted material, a copywriter is someone who writes “copy.”

Copy is writing that is intended to persuade. It could persuade you to buy something, to cut out a coupon, to click the “like” button, to start a free trial. You get the idea.

Some examples of things a copywriter would write are ads (newspaper, Facebook, or Google ads), sales letters (can be for snail mail or email), website copy (home page, about page, etc).

You may wonder, are blogs an example of copywriting?

Well, it depends on what the blog post’s intent is. Most blog posts are meant to entertain, educate, or inform. In that case, the post is considered “content writing.”

But, if the overall purpose of the blog post was to persuade you to buy a product/service or persuade you to email/call/Whatsapp then the blog post would be considered copywriting.

Many copywriters say they only write copy and no content and many content writers say they only write content.

Personally, I find that copy and content are intertwined and it’s helpful to be able to do both.

For example, a copywriter could write a series of informative and entertaining blog posts for a company’s website. After reading these well-written content marketing posts, you feel that your awareness and trust in this company has increased.

Then comes a copywriting blog post and a series of emails that talks about the company’s products and how it could benefit you, persuading you to contact them for a demo or a quotation.

Because you’ve already felt a connection with the company through their content marketing blog posts, you’re more inclined to contact them.

But if you’ve never heard of them before, and you receive a sales email out of the blue, you’re probably more inclined to ignore this email or hit the delete button.

So in this way, content (the informative blog posts) and copy (the persuasive email) go hand in hand.

5 Benefits of Hiring a Copywriter

Now that you know what a copywriter is, why would you hire one and not do the writing yourself?

Here are 5 reasons to hire a copywriter:

1. Saves You Time

You started your business because you were passionate about your product (or service). Based on this passion, you were inclined to learn everything about doing business so that you can run a profitable company.

If writing is not your passion, then you would not be inclined to learn everything about it. And it would take you longer than a professional copywriter to create your website copy, email messages, newsletters, and other written material.

Save yourself time by investing in a professional copywriter and reinvest your time-savings back into running your business.

2. Helps You Develop Your Brand Voice and Keep it Consistent

Your brand voice can make or break your company’s success. Think about brands you’re drawn to — their commercials, their print ads, etc.

There’s a style there that appeals to you, and it likely has a lot to do with their brand voice. A brand voice can be witty or silly or formal or friendly. It can be any style that’s appropriate to your business.

A copywriter is trained to understand your brand, develop your brand voice, and help keep your brand voice consistent throughout your marketing material.

3. Gives You an Outside Perspective

Sometimes you look at something for so long that you can’t see the forest for the trees.

When you’re running your business day in and day out, you may not realize that aspects of your business which are intimate to you are brand new and completely foreign to your potential customers.

As an outsider to your company, I can view your business through the eyes of a potential client and ask relevant questions from their point of view to tailor your website to these potential clients.

4. Generates Persuasive and Convincing Copy

A copywriter’s job is to persuade using the written word.

To that end, every heading, title, subtitle, body copy, etc is used for that purpose.

However, there must be a balance between convincing copy and not sounding like an overeager salesperson. If your content is too much like a commercial, potential customers will disregard it completely.

The perfect middle ground is persuasive and entertaining copy.

A good copywriter can help you achieve that balance.

5. Helps You Rank Higher in Search Engines

A good copywriter understands search engine optimization (SEO) and uses it to your advantage.

So in addition to striking the balance between persuasive and entertaining content, a copywriter also has to structure this content to appeal to both your potential clients and to Google search algorithms.

Great copy is a marriage of proper and consistent brand voice, persuasive story telling, and SEO best practices (target keywords, metadata, backlinks, and more).

The end result is online copy that resonates with your target audience as well as helps you rank higher in Google searches so that you get more website visitors which can lead to more sales.
